Our team is comprised of Wall Street investment professionals with experience in biotechnology sellside and buyside equity research, institutional equity sales, healthcare investment banking and hedge fund portfolio management. Our team also has organic chemistry research experience in academia and at pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
Andrew McDonald is an experienced healthcare investment professional with experience in identifying transformative products and technologies in all stages of development. Prior to co-founding LifeSci Advisors, Andrew served as senior biotechnology analyst at Great Point Partners, a dedicated life science hedge fund. From 2004-2006, Andrew was Head of Healthcare Research and a Biotechnology Analyst at ThinkEquity Partners, a boutique investment bank. Prior to entering the financial services industry, Andrew was a medicinal chemist at Cytokinetics from 2001-2004, where he discovered and developed a promising anti-cancer agent now in clinical trials. Andrew began his pharmaceutical career as a medicinal chemist at Pfizer. Andrew received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from UC Irvine and completed his B.S. in chemistry at UC Berkeley.
Herb has been associated with the financial services industry for over twenty years as a manager, regulator, and corporate executive and financial industry consultant. Mr. Pontzer served as a senior executive and Chief Compliance Officer for two national independent broker-dealer/RIAs. As CCO, he was responsible for the development and implementation of risk management programs that included auditing, surveillance, complaint handling, training, advertising, regulatory reporting, platform and direct business processing and the management of the compliance departments. Mr. Pontzer’s work experience in the corporate sector was preceded by a 12 year career as a regulator with the NASD (now known as FINRA). He received a BA in Government from Georgetown University and an MBA in Finance from American University. He is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS).
Michael Rice has experience in portfolio management, corporate management, investment banking and capital markets. Prior to co-founding LifeSci Advisors, Michael was the co-head of health care investment banking at Canaccord Adams, where he was involved in debt and equity financing. Michael was also was a Managing Director at Think Equity Partners where he was responsible for managing Healthcare Capital Markets, which included structuring and executing numerous transactions, many of which were firsts at ThinkEquity. Prior to that, Michael served as a Managing Director at Banc of America serving large hedge funds and private equity healthcare funds. Previously, he was a Managing Director at JPMorgan/Hambrecht & Quist.
Jonathan is primarily responsible for marketing the BioShares Biotechnology Products and Biotechnology Clinical Trial exchange traded funds managed by LifeSci Index Partners, LLC, an affiliate of LifeSci Capital under common control. Prior to joining LifeSci in October 2015, Jonathan was the Senior Vice President – Investments of Gideon Strategic Advisors, a comprehensive wealth management team under the umbrella of AXA Advisors. In this role, he helped grow the client asset base to over $80MM in less than four years and was personally responsible for all asset management activities. Before AXA, he worked at Basso Capital, a hedge fund based in Stamford, CT. He earned a B.S. in Finance from Northeastern University and a certificate in retirement planning from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. His interests outside of work include reading, fine dining, and playing as much golf as possible.

Paul Yook established and operates LifeSci’s ETF-related businesses, including LifeSci Index Partners, LLC, an SEC-registered investment advisor and index provider, as well as the BioShares exchange traded funds. Prior to joining LifeSci in June 2014, Paul worked as a healthcare hedge fund portfolio manager and equity research analyst at Galleon Management. He began his Wall Street career in healthcare investment banking at UBS Securities and at Goldman, Sachs & Co. where he was involved in numerous IPOs, secondary offerings and M&A transactions for healthcare companies ranging from small, emerging biotechnology companies to large, multinational pharmaceutical companies. He earned a B.S.E in Economics from the Wharton School and a B.A. in Biochemistry from the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. He serves as Treasurer of Smack Mellon, a nonprofit arts organization in Dumbo, Brooklyn and resides in New York City with his wife and two young children.
